Sheen is a durability decision as much as an aesthetic one. Flat and matte finishes hide surface imperfections beautifully and are ideal for ceilings and low-traffic formal rooms, but they are difficult to clean without burnishing. Eggshell is the workhorse for most living spaces, enough washability for daily life with minimal glare. Satin steps up the durability for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, and children’s rooms where wiping down walls is routine. Semi-gloss and gloss belong on trim, doors, and cabinetry, where the harder film resists chipping and the reflectivity deliberately defines architectural lines. One rule worth remembering: the higher the sheen, the more it reveals surface flaws, which is precisely why preparation matters most on trim.
